If you want to embark on a journey to uncover your optimal life, and have patience with yourself and journey where you've not been before, ever, yet some of it will seem familiar, then let's journey together!

If you want to embark on a journey to uncover your optimal life, and have patience with yourself and journey where you’ve not been before, ever, yet some of it will seem familiar, then let’s journey together!

What do you want most with your life? Some people would say, some kind of car, or a stylish house or a power job or branded clothing, jewelry: and this list could and wrap planet earth.

How about this? “How many people recognize they’d want peacefulness in their lives?” Or! “A quiet and relaxed life?” Or! “Clarity for their life?”

When you quiet yourself and ask, “What do I want more than anything?” what is it that you’ll say? When it comes down to it, I bet it won’t be earthly possessions, rather how you’d like to live your life! How you’d like to experience your life! I offer you that.

And all the possessions aren’t excluded at all. They’d have a different meaning for you. Humankind attempts to derive value from say, a car, which is only transport. On our journey, the reason for such behavior is explored fully. You’ll see possessions for what they are. That doesn’t mean you’ll have a car that is falling apart. Not likely. You’ll have a reliable car: even upmarket: yet merely as a means to an end and not to derive value for yourself from it. At the foundation of our journey to uncovering your optimal life, you see firsthand why you might feel you need to obtain value from your car, and such possessions. Note, this is the case with all belongings, where we attempt to derive value from them.

Once you uncover your optimal life, and the reason you weren’t aware it (your optimal life) existed, the clarity gained puts a new perspective on everything. Such that you cannot imagine.

Although at the time I had no idea (yes, I now recognize subconsciously we know much more than we realize), I always felt something was wrong in my life. The reality after I awoke to my optimal life was different to before -indescribably different.

Usually we go for things which we have to serve. When you’re living your optimal life, you create everything you desire. You have balance and know what it is you desire. What you desire serves you. The previous behavior is nipped in the bud! We strive for what serves us: that which compliments and contributes to our optimal life.

You might already be at a point of extreme anxiety. You might have arrived where your life borders on being traumatic. You might even be living a traumatic life. When I embarked on my journey, I was living a traumatic life. I experienced each day as hell. I didn’t know what I wanted with my life. I had no clarity. Navigating each day caused anxiety. I didn’t know which way to turn.

With insight into the mechanics of my life and what made me tick, I embarked on my own uncovering journey. I got myself out of the anxiety and the trauma I experienced each day. I uncovered the clarity for my life. I gained the wisdom for my life. I started functioning with an increasing quality of life. Slowly I gained confidence. No matter where you find yourself currently, the principles behind our optimal lives apply equally to each of us. You can start your journey from wherever you are right now.

What’s most important though, is that you uncover why you do what you do. That you start to see your optimal life and what it would be like to live optimally.

You’d make your life happen for yourself – in peacefulness. Where each day you’d journey and do the things you like doing.

Are you ready to take the first step of your uncovering journey?

Hotels were originally intended to provide short term lodging for travelers en route to business or pleasure activities. The first versions included the barest of necessities, while those of today provide comforts guests have at home. As a result some guests have stayed for decades without checking out.

The first hotels offered only a small room with bed, chair, table, small dresser, wash basin and pitcher. Baths, when they became available, may have been down the hall and shared with the other guests. The room was basically a place to sleep.

Over time more amenities were included as new technologies like telephones, televisions, alarm clocks, coffee makers, irons, hair dryers, refrigerators, air conditioners, and the internet were developed and became standard accessories. Luxury facilities became competitive in their wooing of guests and ratings.

Now they offer everything from gym equipment, spas, and swimming pools to child care, laundry, newspaper, and massage to beauty shops, meeting rooms, and live entertainment. Many include casinos. The Concierge is eager to assist with directions, advice, and arrangements.

As a result some guests have extended their stays at their preferred resorts or lodges for many years. Most anything that they might enjoy in their own home was available at the inn. The twenty-four hour a day staff and freedom from the normal chores and worries of home ownership like cleaning, yard work, and maintenance appeals to them. They are able to circumvent the purchase of all kinds of tools, equipment and supplies needed to furnish and operate a household. Shopping for cookware, vacuums, linens, and other items can be avoided. It may not even be necessary to buy a car.

These people have generally been people of means who could pay for the convenience. Many have been actors. They may have become accustomed to the lifestyle during filming on location. Larry Fine, of the Three Stooges, and his wife lived for years with his wife, and raised a daughter there. Egyptian actor Amad Zaki spent the final 15 years of his life there. Richard Harris lived for years there, and actress Elain Stitch, was a resident for a decade.

Vladimere Nabokov, novelist, and his wife lived there in Russia from 1961 until the time of his death in 1977. Nicola Tesla, inventor or many electrical devices we take for granted today, resided there for the last decade of his life, and died in his room. Cocco Chanel, fashion designer lived in the same one for over thirty years. General Douglas McArthur lived there for 14 years until his passing.

British entrepreneur Jack Lyons lived in one for several years. Eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes lived in them at various periods. He moved into one in 1948 and spent $11 million in a single year for lodging there with his entourage. He lived a recluse the last ten years of his life, until 1976, in various hotels located in Beverly Hills, Boston, Las Vegas, Vancouver, London, Bahamas, Nicaragua, and Mexico.

Today’s hotels offer every amenity some people would expect in a permanent home. They afford a lifestyle that is free of any worry about household chores or home maintenance.

Are you looking for a hotel de luxe reunion a Time Square New York? Make your reservation online for a luxury New York hotel meeting, and enjoy your vacation.

A new concept in resort management, buying timeshares, was improvised during the 1960′s. This new idea in the resort industry paved the way for a higher gain in revenue and led to the revolution of timeshare rentals that would follow.

The short version of timeshares is that it is a way for people to own instead of rent their vacation home. Resorts offer guests a method for them to own a week of vacation a year instead of having to rent every year.

Traditionally these weeks were very similar to real estate deeds. There are more options coming each day but most of them are still based on this idea of owning a deed. Many owners find this a benefit as they can take ownership of their “vacation home”.

The industry continues to evolve with new options and new plans to fit more and more lifestyles and financial profiles.

Here are some of the many options timeshare owners are privy to:

1. The owner of the timeshares can use it. 2. The timeshare deed could be presented as a gift to family or close friends. 3. Owners have an option of internally exchanging the timeshares under the umbrella of the resort group. 4. Owners have an option to externally exchanging the timeshares with other resorts that numbers to thousands. 5. Lastly, Owners also have an option to advertise it as timeshare rentals.

Timeshare Rentals

For many timeshare owners who may not travel every year, renting is a financially viable option. It is the only one of the five options above which brings money back to the owner’s pockets. To do this timeshare owners look for luxury travelers that are looking for more than just a hotel stay.

For the travelers, a rental allows them to stay at better accommodations for the same price. It is the difference of staying at a luxury resort condo versus staying at a regular hotel. This is a bigger bonus for potential buyers who want to test out how the timeshare industry works.

Because rentals give more bang for the buck to travelers over normal hotel stays, this gives a great financial option for both the renter and the owner.

Timeshare Rentals on the Web

Websites are available advertising timeshare rentals. If their classifieds come directly from the owners, the potential clients would be able to save huge amount of money. Although, timeshare rentals are supposedly hundreds of dollars cheaper than what one would pay for the usual rent for a resort.

Owners can also opt to use timeshare rental websites and pay a listing fee. The advantage of this is that the website itself takes care of the promotion and marketing of their own site to garner that listing fee.

Not to mention websites will often provide tools to the timeshare owner for monitoring and promoting as well. As far as the listing cost, it is a small cost to pay to put money back in your pocket as opposed to letting your timeshare week sit idly by. So it is a great use of the internet for everyone.

In conclusion, with the boom of the timeshare industry, it was clear that timeshare rentals would not be far behind. It gives financial benefits for the owner who might otherwise have to let their unit go for a week. It gives financial benefits to the traveler as they will get more for their money with a rental. And it is as easy to do as use the internet as that is the place where most timeshare rentals are listed.

Whether you are an owner or prospective renter, I hope this article on renting a timeshare has been helpful.

Boating is enjoyed by almost everyone and there are few things that can compare to taking a boat out on the lake to fish or ski or taking a speed boat out on the open water. A pleasure craft is the ultimate in summer recreation for some people and summer simply isn’t complete without it. Boating does not necessarily require a huge monetary investment because boats can be as elegant or simple as the purpose and budget require.

A yacht might certainly be thought of as a top of the line pleasure craft and it is definitely desired by many boaters, it is not always suited for every situation or purpose. A tiny fishing boat with a quiet trolling motor and a very low hull may be far more desirable for the boater who is an avid fisherman. The quiet and usually low powered motor and very low hull lets the owner of a fishing boat come in very close to shore without frightening the fish unduly.

No matter the size or the purpose of a water craft, there are laws and regulations governing the safe operation of boats. Most boats require that the operator take the appropriate safety classes and to have a craft operator card as well. A boating license is necessary in most regions and proves that the holder has passed the competency exam and understands boating laws and safety.

Boating has become increasingly more popular and with the increase in the number of boats on the waterways comes the necessity of responsible boating by operators. The operator of any craft must understand the laws and regulations governing their type of conveyance. There are multiple types of operator licenses but the pleasure craft boat license is the most common.

Boat safety is a serious issue and most operators of leisure craft know and obey safety laws and regulations. Boat licenses and competency courses assure that the operator is completely up to date on these applicable safety laws. It is important that the operator know which craft has the right of way, how many life vests are required and what the speed limit is in an area.

Boating laws bring order into what might otherwise be a chaotic highway with no traffic lanes or signals. Learning the rules of the water and basic boat safety give any operator the confidence to deal with almost any situation on the water. A license is simply physical proof the operator understands the laws and regulations and has displayed competency.

People can invest many thousands of dollars in their recreation, this is particularly true of boats used for leisure and sports. They feel the investment is well worth it. However, as valuable as the dollars spent on the craft, is the time spent learning the boat laws and acquiring a boating license.

Whether enjoying the waterways inland, or experiencing the thrill of the open water the competent boat operator can assure that both they and their passengers arrive home safely. Pleasure craft provide leisure time opportunities and a sport that can be enjoyed whether they are young or old. It only makes sense to assure that the operator has all the skills and knowledge through boating course and a license as well.

Unleash your inner Magellan. Sort out a boat test and hit the high seas. Summer is here, get a validated boat license or operator card and set sail.

Traveling away from home for business is a lifestyle that many business people have to learn to live with. Going from one city or even country to another can make a person tired of living in hotels. However this does not have to be the case, particularly when corporate apartments are so readily available. Corporate apartments Mississauga offer business travelers a place to stay that is preferable to staying in a hotel for many reasons, and many of these are related to the service and standards that corporate users expect. There are clearly certain differences between a standard corporate apartment and one that meets and excels clients’ needs such as:

Staying in a good corporate apartment can provide huge savings when compared to staying in a hotel. Typically this can be around 30% cheaper, which when considered over a 7 night stay can really add up. Anyone who regularly needs to use corporate apartments will know this and will typically use them based on these prices, amongst other things.

Owners of corporate apartments should work to understand the needs of their clients. This should be through contact with them and discussions on what clients have liked about the corporate apartment, and what they didn’t. Listening to clients is crucial and many lessons can be learned through finding out where you are not meeting your corporate client’s needs. If you want to exceed your client’s expectations this is something that you need to do on a regular basis.

Quality must always be constant and consistent. There is no room for poor quality apartments and services in this industry. This is why furnished apartments Mississauga have everything to make a traveler feel as though they are right at home. Having the kind of luxury furniture and fixtures adds an extra touch to your corporate client’s experience, which is vital for good service.

Clients shouldn’t always have to travel out or wait for quality. As such, the best corporate apartments provide amenities beyond those found in even the best hotels. Places to cook meals, larger beds, flat screen televisions and on-site laundry facilities are considered extras at many hotels, costing above and beyond the price for a normal night’s stay. In contrast, these are typically standard offerings in many corporate apartments.

Evaluate all your available options when selecting a corporate apartment. Not areas in which some offerings exceed those of others, and use those as a guideline in knowing what you might wish to find in a quality corporate apartment. Also, knowing how some offerings fail to meet expectations can be a good guide in knowing which behaviors and practices good corporate apartments should avoid.

The best corporate apartments follow through, fulfilling their promises and delivering on everything that they advertise. Only by doing this can a corporate apartment be assured of repeat business and happy, loyal clients.

Meeting and exceeding client needs is an important aspect of all good corporate apartments. Mississauga business travelers should feel as if they are staying in a home away from home, providing all the amenities, comforts and services they might need to support them in their work, and to maintain repeat and happy business. It is only by recognizing the needs of Mississauga’s professionals that these goals can be attained.

Stu Ungar didn’t have much going for him in most areas of life. In fact, it could very well be argued that he was downright inept in most areas of existence. He also had a self destructive streak that manifest itself in heavy drug use and other behaviors. Ungar, however, had one great gift–he was a prodigy with a deck of cards. He would become one of the first superstars of poker before it became a fixture on ESPN, but wouldn’t live to enjoy the ‘boom’. Ungar would eventually be done in by his baser elements, and would be found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room in November,’88.

Ungar’s skills at the poker table were like Mozart’s at the piano. While countless volumes of poker strategy and theory have been written, Ungar’s understanding of the game was downright instinctive. Ungar’s greatest achievement was his three World Series of Poker victories, but he won millions in informal games and profitable card room sessions. The amazing thing about Ungar’s sheer mastery of Texas Hold’em was the fact that it was the third card game he had mastered. Ungar first came to Las Vegas as a gin rummy prodigy; he had beaten all of the good players on the East Coast and moved to the desert mecca in search of new opportunities. He had soon run the table of Nevada’s gin players, and then turned to blackjack out of necessity. He was quickly barred as a card counter at a number of Southern Nevada casinos. Needing a new vocation, he took up poker.

Ungar’s problem was that he was awful at basic survival skills. He fought a number of addictions-most notably to drugs and sports gambling. After his WSOP win in’97, he was nearly broke and wasted away from drug use by the time the’98 tournament rolled around. Vegas casino owner Bob Stupak provided the $10,000 he needed to defend his title, but as the games began Ungar cowered in his darkened hotel room unable to pull himself together enough to play.

There are countless other Ungar stories that evoke the same theme: he once paid cash for a new Mercedes and drove it until it simply fell apart from lack of basic maintenance. He signed his mortgage paperwork at the table in the Dunes poker room and was taken aback that he couldn’t make his down payment in chips.

Sadly, Ungar’s death came as a ray of hope had entered his life. Noted casino owner and longtime friend Bob Stupak had stepped in to help Ungar pay off his debts, clean up his life, and provide the stake money to enter the major poker tournaments. Ungar was found two days after the two had formalized the agreement in a contract. Ungar also left behind an ex-wife and a teenage daughter, who still live in Las Vegas. The official cause of death was listed as “coronary atherosclerosis” and a mixture of drugs including cocaine, methadone and Percodan were found in his system.

While many legendary gamblers have been tough, larger than life individuals with a healthy dose of ‘street smarts’, Ungar was the diametric opposite. He was almost completely helpless away from the poker table. In the card room, he became an almost unbeatable warrior. While his death came years before the ‘poker boom’, his influence as a pioneer of the game is without question.

There’s a strange dichotomy between the complexity of high level sports handicapping and the amount of theoretical literature on the subject. While successful sports betting is a complex and difficult pursuit, there’s very little that’s been written on the subject from a serious theoretical angle. For that reason, it can be helpful to delve into the wealth of books available to the serious poker player for insights that can be applied to sports betting.

Poker–like sports betting–can be a profitable endeavor, and one in which knowledge and skill can counteract the theoretical odds against him. Legendary poker theorist Bob Caro once noted that while there are some professional poker players, sports bettors or blackjack players there’s not a single professional roulette player.

The reason for that is that the house advantage in roulette is too high to overcome by any combination of skill, money management, strategy or discipline. To throw in another Caro concept, its a case where the decisions made by the roulette player simply don’t have a role in overcoming the house advantage. Over the long haul whether you choose red or black, even or odd the house edge remains the same.

Caro argues that one of the poker players most valuable weapons is discipline at the table. The reason for this is that the average person goes into a casino for precisely the opposite reason”he wants to have some downtime away from the discipline and order that circumscribes the rest of his life. He wants to down a few cocktails, leer at some cocktail waitresses, and throw some money around for awhile. Hes not worried about theoretical return on investment, pot odds or other concepts of serious play. Casinos exist for the sole reason of providing him all of the escapism he wants while they slowly use their house advantage to make a profit off of him. Granted, poker operates differently in terms of the house advantage but the motivation that drives the recreational gambler to the poker table is no different than that which drives him to the slot machines or blackjack layout.

The importance of discipline that Caro imparts to poker players also applies to serious sports gamblers. The most fundamental component of sports gambling success is to look at it with the same degree of seriousness, discipline and professionalism that you would any other vocation. It’s crucial to rework your thought processes to those of a professional, and abandon all vestiges of the ‘recreational gambler’s’ approach to betting. The greater degree to which you can be disciplined and methodical in your sports gambling, the greater your level of success and profitability.

There’s nothing wrong with being a recreational sports gambler, or a recreational gambler of any sort. They’re vital to those of us who do this for a living since they’re what keeps casinos and sportsbooks in business. Ultimately, the best handicapping is pointless without a sportsbook to take the action.

If your goal is to bet recreationally, that’s great. Unless you have the dedication, desire and discipline to approach it at a profession a recreational approach to gambling is ultimately better for most people. You might benefit from some greater money management discipline, but at the end of the day as long as you don’t bet more than you can afford to lose it’s really no big deal.

Serious sports bettors often dismiss futures wagers as sucker bets targeted at 'squares' looking for a big payoff.

Serious sports bettors often dismiss futures wagers as sucker bets targeted at ‘squares’ looking for a big payoff. For example, a typical futures ‘sucker bet’ would be something like betting that Harvard will win the NCAA basketball tournament at 500/1 odds. Sure, the potential payback is huge but here’s the problem–the “true odds” of Harvard winning the NCAA hoops tournament are astronomical, and certainly well in excess of 500/1. That means that from the outset this bet represents a poor wagering value.

Of more practical concern to the serious sports bettor is the necessity of tying up a portion of your wagering bankroll for a long period of time. Additionally, once you’ve placed a futures bet the outcome is still subject to the typical areas of concern for sports handicappers–injuries, trades, coaching changes, etc. It’s hard enough to stay on top of these variables on a day-to-day basis, and predicting them over the full season is downright impossible.

Despite their downsides, futures bets have an important place in the investment oriented sports bettor’s arsenal. The ‘prime directive’ for serious sports betting is to think of it not in terms of wins and losses, but in terms of value. Futures wagers frequently present opportunities to lock in line value and create overlay situations. In some cases, judicious use of futures can produce situations in which a bettor can realize a profit from any outcome! Below are some basic concepts for properly using futures wagers to maximize value.

Futures can present an opportunity to ‘earn’ a greater value on certain bets. For example, it has become common for sports books to take action on entertainment events like the Academy Awards. By paying close attention to Hollywood gossip and entertainment news, a bettor can actually have a better take on these outcomes than the bookmaker.

Every year some sportsbooks start to take action on the big Academy Awards categories like Best Picture and Best Director well before the actual nominations are released. If you can stay up-to-date on the buzz surrounding certain films you can get substantially better value than if you wait until after the nominations are released.

The way the film industry works makes futures bets of this sort particularly appealing. Release schedules for films are set well in advance, and the cut off date for Academy Award consideration is the end of the calendar year. That way it’s easy for a handicapper to isolate a number of serious Oscar candidates out of the hundreds of films released annually. With more work, that can be narrowed down even more and once a workable number of potential winners has been reached it’s just a matter of shopping around for the best value.

It’s also possible to leverage value in the ‘stick and ball’ sports with future wagers. There are obviously more variables in sports than in the entertainment industry and the top teams are never going to be found ‘under the radar’. For example, you can already bet that the Patriots will win the 2010 Superbowl but you’ll be hard pressed to find a value price on such a popular team with the general public.

To use future bets effectively in this manner, you need to dig a little deeper. For example, before the NHL All Star break you could have bet on the Carolina Hurricanes to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at prices as high as 25/1 or 30/1. Now, they’re in the Eastern Conference Finals and priced as low as 5/1.

This play wasn’t based on any sort of profound revelation that a team that underachieved early in the season would turn it around, but rather on the potential value they presented. In other words, the ‘true odds’ were far less than the number offered at the time the bet was placed. At these high prices, its possible to isolate a few potential ‘dark horse’ candidates and should any pan out they present a variety of opportunities to hedge and lock in profits.

Also, don’t forget to consider ‘the field’. Many futures wagers lump a number of teams or competitors together as ‘the field’ and offer a single price to bet them all. Occasionally, the quick thinking handicapper can find unique value situations. For example, after Dale Earnhardt’s tragic death in 2001 some sportsbooks continued to offer a ‘field’ position on rookie of the year. A bettor who followed NASCAR closely would have quickly realized that Kevin Harvick–who replaced Earnhardt in his Richard Childress racing Chevy–qualified for the ‘rookie of the year’ award and could have bet the field at prices as high as 15/1. After he won his first race, the price for ‘the field’ dropped to 2/1 and by midseason ‘the field’ was a -250 favorite.

While this sort of situation is unique, there have been other situations where ‘the field’ presented good values. At one point, it wasn’t unusual to find a ‘field’ bet on NASCAR road races that included the road course specialists like Ron Fellows and Boris Said–meaning you could bet these ‘ringers’ and several others with one bet! Again, these opportunities don’t come around often but the value they present justifies paying close attention to them.

Of course its crucial to shop around for any futures book play to find the best price. It’s a smart thing to do on any wagering proposition, but the price differential on futures wagers often vary widely from book to book. A little bit of work can produce a significantly better price which means more value.

Because it is quite impossible to replicate the effect of human touch, the massage chair has become a very hot item in the market today. If you do not own one yet, this list of seven things you would love about a massage chair can surely help you make a wise choice.

1. If you have your own massage chair you do not have to leave the house, wait for your turn or go search for a reliable therapist. You can have a relaxing massage therapy without having to stress yourself or go through all the trouble.

2. Get a massage any time you want with your own massage chair and the you won’t have to wait in line for hours or get onto a table that someone else has just climbed off of-spa centers are usually packed with different people getting massages.

3. Having a massage chair as a long-term investment for your health is worth around $1000 to a whopping $5000 for a massage chair…is it worth it? You bet, this would seem like a small price to pay if in exchange of this, you would be able to get optimal relaxation and health improvement. Moreover, if you calculate the price that you would have to pay for a therapist each time you would want to get a massage, this one-time expense can be less costly.

4. Undressing, laying on a massage table many people have used…yuck it doesn’t sound inviting now if you owned your own massage chair you could have that massage whenever you wanted and the chair would be personalized just for you!

5. State of the art technology is put into each massage chair giving most manufacturers of massage chairs the ability to utilize the high-tech engineering and high quality materials to produce an efficient and reliable electronic massage chair. Most of the newer chairs have even added additional features like a full body heating system, recliners, arm and calf massages, and even an MP3 player.

6. A massage chair can be a nice addition to your living room. Aside from providing a soothing massage therapy, this chair can also double as a piece of furniture that can add beauty and class to your home.

7. With a massage chair, you can do away with the guessing game. You can easily adjust the chair’s intensity and speed to get a massage therapy that feels right for you. So put on some relaxing music and let the chair smooth away that stress.

It is only after you buy yourself a massage chair that you would be able to realize what this list really means.

For the NFL handicapper, understanding the methodology behind NFL totals (also called over/under numbers) is also a crucial component of his wagering arsenal. For those not familiar with NFL totals, its the large number youll see accompanying most pointspread betting propositions. For example, the 2009 Superbowl line opened with Pittsburgh a 6 point favorite over Arizona. The total was set at 47. Simply stated, the total allows the better to decide whether the combined score between the two teams will go OVER or UNDER. In the case of the aforementioned Superbowl, Pittsburgh won by a final score of 27-23 meaning that bettors who backed the OVER cashed their tickets.

To the uninitiated, betting on NFL totals can seem very arbitrary–like office pools where players pick the final score of a game. In reality, they’re a favorite tool of serious sports handicappers. Many are of the opinion that its easier to accurately foretell the *type* of game that will transpire between two teams rather than who will actually win and by how much. Like NFL pointspread wagers, the ability for a bettor to pick is spots is also a valuable asset as a successful handicapper can look for situations where the total itself is off as well as more subjective factors (weather, injury or matchups) that can contribute to the scoring output or lack thereof.

The basics of setting NFL totals are fairly simple: the bookmaker looks at the offensive and defensive data for the two teams and constructs a number based on points allowed and points scored. If one team had scored 275 points and allowed 350 in their previous sixteen games thats a total of 625. Divided by 16 and thats an average of just over 39 points per game. If their opponent had scored 285 and allowed 400 (685) over 16 games that translates to just under 43 points per game. Add the two numbers together, divide by two and youve got a base total of 40.5.

At this point other factors are considered such as the significance of key numbers like 3 and 7 on final scores, weather conditions, injuries, playing surface, etc. Another component that is important is the qualitative matchup between the offense and defense of each team”meaning that a team like the Baltimore Ravens with a strong defense will be more likely to impose their will on a team resulting in a lower final score.

Of course as in the case of the NFL pointspread, public perception is a crucial component of the linesmaking process. For example, the conventional wisdom is that bad weather like rain, snow, or sleet results in lower scores and for that reason a bookmaker will shade the total accordingly. However, its not quite that simple–some handicappers would maintain that sloppy weather can produce higher scores in certain situations as defensive backs arent able to cut as well and react to the man their covering. Furthermore, turnovers are in theory more likely in inclement weather.

In conclusion, NFL totals are a very good opportunity for an astute handicapper to take advantage of a situational matchup to find good wagering value. Like most elements of the sports handicapping discipline, its not easy to stay a step ahead of the bookmakers who have access to the same weather and injury–and have factored it into the number–but is a very entertaining and potentially rewarding challenge.
