From Red To Black, The Journey Of The Pokemon Franchise
The franchise keeps on growing as the journey continues for the masters who aiming to catch ‘em all. Two decades after it started, the franchise has spanned 5 generations, a trading card game, 14 movies, games on several platforms and countless volumes of manga.
As a child, Satoshi Tajiri was very fond of catching insects near their home in Tokyo. His idea was to put this hobby into a game and let everyone play it. With the help of Shigeru Miyamoto, Tajiri pitched in his idea to Nintendo. The original idea came about as Tajiri imagined his creatures battling out between the Game Boy Cable Link. The popularity of the game lies on the adventure and evolution of characters being played.
On February 27, 1996, Satoshi Tajiri’s dream came to reality with Pokemon Red and Green. Both versions allowed players to catch, train, and trade 151 Pokemon. When the game became popular, Pokemon blue was released. A year after the release, the anime version was shown on April fool’s day of 1997. It was translated into manga which was entitled the Electric Tale of Pikachu. After the Pokemon Center was inaugurated in Tokyo on the 25th of April in 1998, the Pokemon Company also started its operations. During this generation as well, the franchise reached milestones with the introduction of the card game.
During the same year as the Pokemon store started in business, the N64 based game Pokemon Stadium was introduced as a variety. Also, the very first full length movie was released entitled Mewto Strikes Back.
November 21st 1999 marked the beginning of the 2nd Generation as the Gold and Silver versions were released. One hundred new Pokemon were added to the existing 151. These new versions were released for the new game boy color. The release of the Ruby and Sapphire versions for Game Boy Advanced marked the beginning of the 3rd generation. The 4th generation marked 10 years of the Pokemon franchise. Diamond and Pearl were released for the Nintendo DS. After the 4th occurrence, there aren’t any leaves yet.
The newest version has Zoroark in the cover signaling the start of the reign of the fifth generation. The Black and White versions were released in 2010 under the DS platform.
